Noodles,

Great response !

I left out the part that doomed cities are likely to return to their population pre-happy motoring which in Las Vegas is something on order of 7,000 people.

Cities which will do 'fine' because of their manufacturing base will also return to their pre-happy motoring populations. In Cleveland's case that isn't much change. In SoCal's case that is a few million fewer people.

By fine I mean relative to free fire zones such as Vegas which will make Mad Max seem like a picnic

I loved the reference to "Baluchitherium", though I think these animals, while large, were actually quite muscular and fit.

Nothing really like the massive mounds of blubber we wee waddling around on 2 legs in America these days.

Drop me a note if you make it to Portland.  Maybe we could get our own Kunstler Cast cheering section going.

Looks like I might be able to take the train down to Portland and get to see Jim @ Powells!

I was thinking the same thing - but would have to jet down 2,000 miles.   I have a sister I could visit in the City and well one could spend days in Powells book store in Portland.  My favoure book store.

Riots in LA?  Hardly makes the news anymore.  http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/09/us/09protests.html?partner=rss&emc=rss

I spent a 48 hour period only once in my life in LA and it was jaw dropping to see people arrested.  Just like in the movies, with cars coming from every direction and officers jumping a guy on the street, chaining him up and into the backseat all in about 30 seconds.  Choppers over Sunset Blvd, cops every few hundred feet,... Maybe they do it for us tourist and visitors?

Stay safe Duncan.

Grove/Atlantic's website sucks sweaty, unmentionable, naughty bits. But, I did manage to find a calendar for Jim's book tour.

KunstlerCast: Crazy Update From LA
Daytime TV, Riot, etc.

Released: Sept. 9, 2010

Duncan shares a quick, crazy update from LA. He was flown to Los Angeles on short notice to appear on a daytime TV show. While in LA he wandered into a real LA riot, with police helicopters, beanbag guns and tear gas. He's fine and has plenty of fodder for future podcasts. But he is unable to post today's podcast (especially because of the poor internet connect at the hotel). Please hang tight and tune in next week. Also, look for JHK at a town near you on his book tour.
