I'd be interested in an explanation of the term, asteroid belt.  The only concept I can think of is miles upon miles of bleak nothingness (highways and parking lots) relieved only by ugly blobs (chain store buildings). Am I close to the mark?

Asteroid Belt is the disconnection of pieces (private and public properties) of a planet (the city/town) thrown out by an explosion (population growth) and suspended by the planet's gravitational pull (car dependent culture).

"Cheese Doodle": Any chemically enhanced non-food food product soon to be extinct.
"Nature Band-aid": A use of cheap, pointless greenery to hide mutilated urban environments.
"UFO's": Those odd, pod-shaped building occupying gigantic parking lots.
"Parking Lagoons": Those gigantic parking lots.
"Family Chauffeur": Mom when kids reach age 12-16.
"Missing Teeth": Empty lots in an otherwise dense urban setting.
"Hannibal Lector School for Tots": Most schools in the US resemble prisons.

If most youth of this generation resemble inmates, it's a greater reflection on today's crop of parents than the children themselves.

Kunstler keeps referencing the Democratic Conventions of the 70s and how history may repeat itself in a more intense way. 

As news reports come in describing the various home security acts Obama has recently signed, people are seeing how more and more power is being given to limit political free speech in the U.S.
