CVS decided a few years ago to go head-to-head with Walgreens in the Twin Cities area, so they plopped down one of their boxes with the goofy low arch across the front, on a newly cleared corner lot at the main intersection in my neighborhood. There were already Walgreens within a mile-and-a-half to the north, south and east. At first it was open 24/7, with bright lights illuminating the parking lot and the neighborhood. And it had to have a drivethrough Rx pickup. They've been cutting back their hours in the past year, and I've wondered aloud to some neighbors about whether it'll close soon. There are never more than a few shoppers in the place, and there are never more than a half dozen cars parked. It's just the standard pile of shit. The only concession that the neighborhood association got was getting the box located at the corner rather than have all the (empty)parking at the street.

Chain drugstores drive me nuts. They serve absolutely no purpose because don't sell anything that can't be procured easier and cheaper somewhere else, they travel in herds, and they are hideously ugly. Hackettstown, NJ is blessed with TWO Rite-Aids across the street from each other. And people in Columbus, OH are still fuming over the destruction of the unique, historic, and beloved Kahiki polynesian restuarant for a typical crap Walgreens box. There were even numerous vacant lots surrounding the site, but they had destroy the Kahiki because it had the misfortune of being located across the street from a CVS.

This discussion reminds me of a drugstore in Newark, DE. Newark is a college town with a quaint, romantic main street, similar to Saratoga Springs. The local drugstore chain built a two story Victorianesque building with apartments above. The national chain built a one story brick box. That brick box is now vacant and scarring the landscape.
