Duncan,

As the organizing member of the Rochester New Urbanism and Sustainable Development meetup (http://newurbanism.meetup.com/121/) and sole writer of the Moderate Urban Champion Blog (linked in my name), I am with you 100% on the desire to simply not have to own a car.

I too live in New York, in Webster a Rochester suburb. Our townhouse/condo is currently for sale as we attempt to move downtown. We sold our 2nd car a few weeks ago and haven't missed it at all as I purchased a monthly bus pass and use it to get to work (at just $2.57 per day so far, a number that keeps dropping the more I use it).

The issue is as Jim says, its not a punishment to live in a dense walkable community. Torontonians get this and I get this, but it will be a large struggle, sadly driven by economic factors as Jim suggests, to create meaningful urban infill and shake the Compulsory Motoring Program.

-Bob

P.S. I have presentation materials up in the 'files' section of the meetup. Feel free to use them in organizing a Troy New Urbanist group if you don't already have one.
